Fashion comes and goes in trends. One minute, ballet flats are all the rage, and the next minute they’re in the bin as you move onto your next must-have item. The exception to this never-ending fashion dilemma is to understand “The Classics.” These items never date and are the definition of chic. Here are my picks for five classic garments. Invest in any of these ageless classics, and you won’t go wrong!

Leather Jackets

flying jacket! It's easy to become emotionally attached to a timeless leather jacket, as it often ties us to strong memories and emotions (think Tom Cruise in Top Gun); it’s no wonder we call it an investment.

How fabulous did David and Victoria Beckham look in his and hers Gucci leather jackets in 1997? This season, leather bomber jackets were seen in the Gucci shows, and fitted leather pieces were seen all over the fall/winter runways at Los Angeles Fashion Week.

Stilettos

Nothing can make a woman’s leg look better than the stiletto heel. Since the leanest, meanest shoe shape came into fashion in the fifties, the spike heel has become our most powerful weapon; and I mean that literally and figuratively!

Stiletto heels, like those seen at D&G for their fall collection, make our legs look as lean as a gazelle's, and can break men’s hearts all over the world (and a few floorboards to boot).

Jeans

Denim revolutionized fashion in the fifties; trousers worn by labourers became the hip garment of choice for a new generation. Since then, jeans have appeared in various extremes: drainpipe, flares, loon, torn, baggy, and blinged up. Now, the non-conformists' choice has become so mainstream, we can even wear them to the office. This season, designer labels like Dsquared2 have favored dark navy colored cropped skinny jeans worn over boots.

The Little Black Dress (LBD)

Since Coco Chanel reclaimed the black dress from dowagers’ wardrobes, we have come to agree on this agreeably flattering, alluring item as being fail-proof. LBDs make you look slimmer and can be dressed up or down, so who wouldn’t love them? I can count at least ten in my wardrobe and I am always on the look out for more. The LBD is elegant, chic and charming.

The evolution of the LBD started in 1949 with Coco Chanel. It is still going strong today on the catwalks of top designer labels. The little black dress has made a profound fashion statement throughout the years. Who could forget the LBD that was the making of Audrey Hepburn’s iconic status in Breakfast at Tiffany’s?

The White Shirt

Whether you’re a schoolgirl or a granny, a white shirt is a chic uniform staple. An endlessly reworked piece, it remains fantastically versatile. White shirts go hand in hand with innocence, cleanliness, and springtime freshness. Remember, it must always be perfectly crisp and clean. This season, the trend is white shirts with pussycat bows (think Margaret Thatcher) or with a corseted front, as seen at Richard Nicoll.
